Between the southwest of France and the north of Spain lies a beautiful land called the Basque Country. Where the Pyrenees meet the Atlantic Ocean.
A place shaped by wind, waves, cliffs, forests, and traditions.
A place where nature feels powerful AND welcoming.
A place where two worlds live side by side.
The ocean has always been my first love.
Salty hair, bare feet in the sand, the endless view of the horizon. After living for years by the sea, I learned something: water will always be by my side. I love the rhythm of the tides, the energy of storms, the way the weather changes so quickly and reminds you how strong nature is.
The ocean feels wild, free, unpredictable. It is incredibly attractive.
But recently, life gave me another gift. I spent time living in the mountains, in the French Alps and so with it came new experiences; long hikes, quiet trails, cold mornings, and a kind of strength I had never felt before. I discovered activities I probably would never have tried otherwise. The mountains taught me patience, resilience, and the beauty of slowing down.
And suddenly, I had two lovers: the ocean and the mountains. The problem is that very few places let you fully live both. But I found the Basque Country where waves and peaks coexist naturally.
Ocean or mountain.
Waves or peaks.
No need to choose anymore.
starting from the beach
It’s impossible to talk about the Basque Country without mentioning its deep connection to the ocean.
This region breathes surf culture.
Surfing happens all year round; early mornings with mist over the water, golden evenings chasing the last waves of the day. Town life blends naturally with beach life. Cafés open onto the sand, boards rest against walls, and sunsets feel like daily rituals.
You’ll find art inspired by waves, stories shaped by storms, and a strong local culture built around respect for the sea. Despite its popularity, many beaches still feel wild and untouched. There’s space to breathe, movement, and the option to experience freedom.
Speaking of movement : outdoor gyms along the coast, runners along the promenade, swimmers braving the water year-round. All sorts of gathering and events for people to live actively.
to climb up the mountains
Driving inland feels like entering another world.
The Pyrenees rise slowly but powerfully, almost as if they’re standing there to protect the land between France and Spain. There’s something deeply reassuring about their presence. Grounded, timeless.
These mountains offer endless ways to move and explore.
Hiking trails that wind through green valleys and quiet forests.
Climbing spots carved into rock faces.
Scenic roads that make every drive feel like an adventure.
Each season brings a new energy.
In summer, long hikes, mountain lakes, sunrise views, and fresh air.
In colder months, peaceful landscapes, crisp mornings, and winter activities higher up.
The mountains teach strength but also calm.
Here, adventure doesn’t mean extreme.
It means connection.
It means breathing deeper.
It means feeling your body working and your mind slowing down.
a perfect balance
What makes the Basque Country truly special is the balance.
French elegance meets Spanish warmth.
Ocean energy meets mountain stillness.
Hot summer days meet refreshing cool air higher up.
It’s a land of contrasts that somehow flow perfectly together.
Like the rhythm of the tides paired with the steady presence of the mountains.
Like moments of wild freedom balanced by deep grounding.
Here, you’re allowed to be many things at once.
Strong and soft.
Wild and calm.
Adventurous and peaceful.
It’s one of the reasons I chose this region to begin creating women-only adventure weekends.
Because it offers so much in a simple, natural, and beautiful way.
Because in just a few days, you can experience incredible variety like hiking one day, ocean adventures the next, laughter, movement, connection, and rest.
And because it feels like a destination made for women who don’t fit into just one box.
If you’ve ever felt torn between ocean and mountain, freedom and grounding, rest and challenge this place might just feel like home to you too.
Sometimes the best destinations aren’t about choosing one dream.
They’re about finding the place where all your dreams meet.
